Other Projects

The brass stampings, beads and gem replicas we offer are used in many projects other than jewelry design. Here are just a few great ideas worth sharing. The beautiful bud vase pictured here was a gift from my sister and her husband. It includes several filigrees, a flower and two cherubs. They are soldered to a large round filigree and a plain brass band to hold it all together. The band doesn't show, but it is inside the design at the heads of the cherubs. The vase can be removed from the ornate holder for cleaning. The same concept could easily be used to make decorated jar candles or bud vases of your own design. Willie Zuniga is still recovering from hand surgery but she can't sit still. She is creating a line of gift items now. You can buy these jars a...

The Storage Dilemma

Have you ever been frustrated by not to being able to find what you need as you are working on a project? Even if you are a very neat person it can still be a daunting task to organize your work area so that you can find that one particular filigree when you need it. We welcome any suggestions or ideas you've found helpful but here some tips that worked for us over the years.  A wall from our warehouse. 1. Keep like items together. For example, large brass OX filigrees all in the same drawer. Small silver OX connectors together in their own zip lock bags within the same drawer and so on. We've used the 18 drawer organizers for years. You can find these in many hardware stores, K-Mart and Sears. If you keep a large number of very small items on hand, let's say your f...
She’s copying me!

She’s copying me!

I share this experience with you in an attempt to help you cope with this frustrating event in the most positive way I know. From the first time a cave dweller made a mark on the wall with a piece of charcoal, I have a feeling there has been this claim of "She's copying me!" When I made jewelry full time, I was widely and blatantly copied. Each time I realized my work was being duplicated, I moved on to learn a new technique, try a new method and experiment with a different style. I didn't waste time and energy lamenting that someone was trying to copy me. It forced me to become a much more accomplished artist.  I am in no way endorsing such actions, however if I had never had competition, I would still be living in ...

More Layering Ideas

In this focal point piece,I gathered seemingly unrelated pieces of filigree, stampings and functional findings and then layered them together to create something out of the ordinary. Tip: Use a dot of E6000 glue between each layer of the pieces to hold everything together. After the project had time to set, I gently pushed the prongs onto the edge of the cameo to give the illusion that they are doing all the work. #A842, #A724, #R154, #B206, #BB43 The item numbers are shown below each piece used to make this pendant. Using a filigree piece like #B206 near the top of the pendant allows for necessary openings to attach chain, ribbon or bead strands. Some elements of this design technique include: 1. Framework - Adds textural interest and defi...
Filigree Wrapping

Filigree Wrapping

I'm often asked, "How do I set those odd shaped vintage stones?" One way is to wrap them in filigree and stampings to create a cage effect. Filigree always has lots of openings from which to attach chain and beaded strands. Please use great caution when folding, bending and otherwise manipulating filigrees and stampings. We do not guarantee that they will hold up to manipulation. Here I used a half round peach colored vintage glass stones. I placed it inside a partially folded together filigree (Item #A727) and then continued to fold it closed..In the image below you can see how I folded  #B208 around from the opposite side so that the ends overlap. I used flat nose pliers I found in the tool section of Sears. They are smaller for cra...
Earrings = A Facelift?

Earrings = A Facelift?

Have you ever thought about why you tend to wear your favorite pair of earrings with so many different looks? Earrings and necklaces can light up your face and make you look thinner. A few years ago, I was a guest on a TV show in Virginia. The interviewer asked me, with doubt in his voice, how I could possibly make a woman look ten pounds thinner instantly. With the help of the female co-host of the show it was easy to demonstrate. I had already staged for her to be wearing small round button earrings and a choker style necklace with yet another round shaped pendant hanging from it. Her sleeves were long and her collar was flat… so was her hair. First I lifted the crown of her hair just a bit, flipped up her collar, took off all that round jewelry and replaced it with small dangle earr...

Sculpture

Brass stampings, gemstone beads, glass bugle beads, gemstone replicas, flat back rhinestones and paint are among the items used to create this shadowboxed sculpture. This product Liquitex Basics - coarse texture gel was found in an art supply store. It adds texture to flat surfaces as shown below. Acrylic paints were used to create the color effects. Start by layering stones, bugle beads and the largest stampings. Finish by layering the smaller stones and stampings in the spaces between and over the larger pieces. (E6000 glue was used in this project.) The finished project was mounted in a black shadowbox found in the frame department of Michael's Arts and Crafts. It was then placed on a black iron table top easel. This project was insp...

Designer Hand Bags

This is an evening bag I decorated for a book being published about embellished accessories. The bag measures about five and a half inches tall and six inches wide. I used a pink glass opal cabochon #B726 with lace edge setting #A539 18x13mm mounted on one of the brass stampings #K09. The whole thing was glued to a purchased beaded and sequined evening bag with a long woven silk strap. Then I glued (E6000 glue) Austrian crystal Swarovski 20ss stones here and there for the bling. The bag sold at auction for $80.00 Visit our store web site VintageJewelrySupplies.com to shop for these and thousands more items.(NOTE: our website best viewed on desktop or tablet)
